An equipotential surface is the locus of the points in an electrostatic field having the same potential. At any point of an equipotential surface, the electric intensity vector of the field is perpendicular to the surface and directed toward the decrease in potential. The intensity at an arbitary point of an electrostatic field is equal to the gradient of potential at that point taken with the minus sign.
